In the quiet town of Lugoff, South Carolina, a horrifying crime shattered the peace in 2006. Elizabeth Shoaf, a bubbly 14-year-old, was abducted while walking home from her school bus stop. The Kidnapping
On September 6, 2006, Elizabeth Shoaf’s life took a drastic turn. Filyaw, a 36-year-old construction worker with a troubled past, approached her while she was walking home. He accused her of possessing marijuana and threatened to arrest her unless she accompanied him. Scared and confused, Elizabeth obeyed. Instead of taking her to a police station, Filyaw led her deep into the woods, where he had meticulously constructed an underground bunker.
This was no hastily dug hole. Filyaw, with his construction background, had created a sinister prison. The bunker, hidden beneath a hillside and camouflaged with brush, measured roughly eight feet by eight feet. Inside, the air was thick with the stench of mildew and human waste. A plastic bucket served as a toilet, and a thin sleeping bag offered little comfort on the cold dirt floor. A pipe provided ventilation, and Filyaw had even rigged a rudimentary shower. This was to be Elizabeth’s prison, a place where Filyaw intended to keep her trapped and under his control.
