John Wayne Gacy: The House of Horrors Pt 2

In the first installment of our series, we explored the carefully crafted facade of John Wayne Gacy, the “Killer Clown” who hid his monstrous nature behind a mask of normalcy. In this post, we will get to know his victims. These innocent boys and young men were meeting friends, walking home, or looking for work. They had no idea that an evil was just around the corner.

The Victims

1/3/72: Timothy McCoy, 16, stops for a layover at the Greyhound bus station on his way home. Gacy picks him up and stabs him in the chest. He is identified in May 1986.

7/31/75: John Butkovich, 18, a former employee of Gacy, goes to the house on Summerdale Avenue to pick up a final paycheck. Gacy shows police his body on December 21, 1978.

4/6/76: Darrell Samson, 19, is reported missing. It is believed he was lured to Gacy’s home with the promise of construction work. His exact date of death is unknown.

5/14/76: Samuel Stapleton (left), 14, and his friend Randall Reffett (right), 15, are walking home from Stapleton’s sister’s residence when they disappear. Stapleton’s bracelet is found in the crawl space, and their bodies later identified.

6/3/76: Michael Bonnin, 17, is traveling from Chicago to Waukegan when he is strangled and buried under Gacy’s bedroom. His fishing license is found in the home.

6/13/76: William Carroll, 16, vanishes after leaving his home with friends, telling his parents he would be back in an hour. His body is later found in the crawl space.

8/5/76: Jimmy Haakenson, 16, calls his mother to let her know that he arrived safely in Chicago. He is not identified until 2017 through DNA samples from his siblings.

8/6/76: Rick Johnston, 17, is dropped off at the Aragon Ballroom for a concert by his mother. He is supposed to call her for a ride home but never does.

10/24/76: Michael Marino, 14, and his friend Kenneth Parker, 16, are last seen together at an intersection where Gacy is known to have picked up victims. They are found buried together under Gacy’s house.

10/26/76: Bill Bundy, 19, leaves for a party and is never seen again. DNA tests confirm he was a victim of Gacy’s in 2011. Like many other victims, he works in construction.

12/1/76: Wayne Alexander disappears sometime between November 1976 and March 1977. His family doesn’t report him missing becasue they think he has gone to California. He is identified through DNA in 2021.

12/11/76: Gregory Godzik, a high school senior who works for Gacy, leaves for a date with his girlfriend and doesn’t return. Gacy claims that Godzik told him he planned to run away.

1/20/77: John Szyc, 19, is lured to Gacy’s home under the pretense that Gacy was interested in buying his car. His high school ring is later found in Gacy’s home.

3/15/77: Jon Prestidge, 20, tells his grandfather that he has found work with a local contractor. He is last seen alive meeting a friend for coffee.

7/5/77: Matthew Bowman, 18, disappears after his mother drops him off at a train station to travel to a court appointment. His sister later reports him missing.

9/15/77: Robert Gilroy, 18, the son of a policeman, lives only four blocks from Gacy’s home. He tells his parents he was going to his horseback riding lesson but it is later discovered he had not been attending them for several weeks. His body is found in the crawl space.

9/25/77: John Mowery, 19, returns to Chicago after 18 months in the Marines. A few months later he leaves his family’s home saying he was going out with some friends and is never seen again.

10/17/77: Russell Nelson, 21, comes to Chicago along with a friend looking for contracting work. He is last seen outside of a local bar.

11/10/77: Robert Winch, 19, moves to Chicago after running away from a foster home in Michigan. His belt buckle is found in Gacy’s home.

11/18/77: Tommy Boling, 20, was married with a 3-year-old son. His wedding ring and dental records are eventually matched to a body in the crawl space.

12/9/77: David Talsma, 20, tells his mother he is going to a rock concert. Gacy strangles him and buries him in the crawl space.

2/16/78: William Kindred, 19, tells his fiancee he is going to a bar. His fiancee knows Gacy but it is not known if he does. He was the last victim buried in the crawl space.

6/??/78: Timothy O-Rourke, 20, tells his roommate that a contractor had offered him a job. His body is found by the Illinois River. Different dates are reported for his disappearance.

11/4/78: Frank Landingin, 19, is seen by his father as he walks down Foster Avenue. His body is found three miles from O-Rourke’s.

11/24/78: James Mazzara, 20, has Thanksgiving dinner with his family and tells them he has a new job working in construction. He is found by the Des Plaines River.

12/11/78: Robert Piest, 15, is working in a local pharmacy when Gacy comes in to speak to the owner. Gacy mentions hiring local teens within earshot of Piest. When Piest’s mother comes to pick him up from work, he asks her to wait while he goes and speaks to a contractor about some work. He never returns.

Many of Gacy’s victims remained unidentified for years. How does this highlight the importance of continued efforts to identify missing persons and bring closure to their families?
